Martin Technology Academy of Math and Science
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Martin a magnet school? We began with a vision for our school which led us to apply for Charter School status. Martin was granted charter status in June 2010. Martin opened its doors as Martin Technology Academy of Math and Science in August 2010. As our vision grew the school decided that being a Magnet school was a better fit for our school community and transitioned from a charter school to a magnet school in 2015.
What is a magnet school? Like Charter Schools, Magnet School concepts were developed through a thoughtful, comprehensive planning process during which parents, teachers and administrators “dreamed a school.” After reaching consensus on innovative or unique educational options for all students, these schools gained approval from the Hall County Board of Education to use a focused, school-wide approach for increased engagement and achievement. If families are interested in their children attending a Magnet School to which they are not zoned, they may submit an application to the school.
How will Martin be held accountable? We will continue to be held accountable by all standardized testing and curriculum guidelines that we currently are held to.
Will the focus on technology, math, and science take away from reading, social studies, and other areas? No. Martin will continue providing the rigorous instruction currently provided in all subject areas. No other subject areas will suffer or be compromised due to charter status.
How will MTA be funded? Martin is still a part of the Hall County School System and will continue to receive state and local funds. Additional funds may be obtained through public grants.
Will special services (speech, gifted, special education, etc.) still be provided? Yes. All special services currently provided will still be provided under charter status.
Will students be required to wear uniforms? Students will not be required to wear uniforms. A survey was sent to parents about uniforms. There was not enough support of uniforms to merit making the decision to have them.
Will the school mascot and colors change? Based on feedback from a parent survey, the marlin will remain the Martin mascot. School colors will remain black and teal.
What special requirements will there be for attending MTA? Please see the MTA Magnet School Application.
